First timers · On your own
Can you go bouldering on your own?
Yes. Bouldering needs no partner, no rope and no belayer, so you can climb a full session by yourself. Walk in any time we are open, complete the waiver, take the safety induction from our crew, and climb. The crew are on the floor if you want a hand reading a climb, and the cafe is there between goes.
Do you need anyone to hold a rope?
There are no ropes here. Every climb is over padded matting and finishes on a marked finishing hold, so nothing needs a second person.
- No harness, no belay device, no partner.
- The safety induction covers falling and landing before you start.
- Our crew are on the floor during opening hours.
What does a solo session look like?
You pick a colour, try climbs, rest, and try them again. Nothing is booked and nothing is timed.
- Entry is all-day access, so you can break for a coffee and go back out.
- Yellow and blue are the easiest two bands we set.
- We set twice a week, so a returning climber has new climbs to find.
How do you meet people here?
On the mats, mostly. People work the same climb in turn and talk about it.
- Ask before giving beta is one of our four Crux Culture policies.
- Inclusivity is another: we welcome all climbers into our space.
- The crew will introduce you to the climbs if you ask them to.
What if you get stuck on a climb?
Ask. Reading a sequence is most of bouldering and nobody does it alone forever.
- The crew know what the setters intended.
- A colour is a band rather than one grade, so try another of the same colour.
- The multicolour tag hides its grade on purpose. Climb it on feel.
Can you bring a dog?
Yes. Dogs are welcome, on lead and tied to a secure spot. There are dog beds and bowls here.
- Keep them off the matting.
- The cafe and the function space are both inside the same building.
