Is bouldering a good workout?
Yes. Bouldering works most of the body in short, hard efforts: grip and forearms, back and shoulders, core to keep your hips in to the wall, and legs to stand up on small footholds. You set your own pace, rest between climbs and stop when you have had enough. It is problem solving and strength at the same time.
What does it actually work?
Pulling muscles and grip take the obvious load, but most of the effort is core and legs once you stop hauling with your arms.
- Forearms and grip are usually what tire first.
- Back, shoulders and core hold your body in to the wall.
- Legs do more than people expect. Good footwork saves your arms.
How hard do you have to go?
As hard as you choose. A climb takes under a minute, and the rest between climbs is yours.
- Climb easier colours for longer, or harder colours with longer rests.
- Warm up on yellows before you try anything that feels hard.
- Stopping while your hands still feel strong is the sensible call.
Do you need to be fit to start?
No. Yellow climbs are set for people who have never touched a wall, and you choose how many you do.
- There is no class to keep up with and no session length to fill.
- Entry is all-day access, so a short first visit is fine.
What else is in the building?
A gym-equipment area with weights, the Grasshopper LED training board and a cafe.
- The Grasshopper board adjusts from 15 to 60 degrees. The crew set the angle.
- It has a colour code for holds and a colour-blind shape mode.
- The cafe does coffee, chai, chocolate, matcha and a drinks fridge.
How often should you come?
Often enough that it stays fun. Climbing is skill as much as strength, so sessions spaced out with rest days between tend to suit it.
- We set twice a week, so there is always something new.
- Memberships and multi-visit passes are both on our pricing page.
- Your fingers and tendons adapt more slowly than your muscles do.
